Windsor horse trials 2006

The Queen mingled with horse trainers and fellow guests at the event, which is regarded as an unmissable event in Her Majesty's diary. The five-day show, held in the private grounds at Windsor Castle, is now in its 72nd year and the Queen has attended every single year since it began as a wartime fundraising event back in It's a show intrinsically linked with the royal family; both the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh competed at it during their younger years, with Prince Philip entering the Carriage Driving at Royal Windsor Horse Show for 30 years, winning it just once in In more recent years, the Queen has watched many of her own horses take part in the showing class competitions.

Her husband, Prince Philip, has also been joining his wife at the event and while he may have recently announced his retirement, he certainly isn't showing any signs of slowing down. Indeed, the year-old royal took the reins as he rode a horse and carriage to the Royal Windsor Horse Show on Wednesday morning. Philip, who by had taken up the sport competitively, representing Britain at several European and World Championships, looked delighted to be back in the driver's seat.

The sport involves either two or four-wheeled carriages pulled by a single horse, a tandem or four-in-hand team. Over the weekend, Prince Philip seemed to be enjoying life after announcing his retirement from royal duties as he travelled up to watch the National Carriage Driving Trials at Catton Hall. He looked relaxed as he enjoyed the annual event at the country house in Derbyshire. The National Carriage Driving Trials has been held at the famous country house - which has been in the hands of the same family since - for the last 15 years.

The Duke of Edinburgh was described a 'randy' young officer by his former Royal Naval colleague. Ex-naval commander Keith Evans, 97, who served alongside Philip in the late s, joked about the Queen's consort when he visited his old school. Mr Evans was a pupil at Pangbourne College in Berkshire and the Duke, who surprised the world with his retirement announcement last week, visited the institution with the Queen to mark its centenary.

When he met the Duke they reminisced briefly about their service together and he showed Philip a letter the Duke had written to him in , thanking Mr Evans for his note congratulating him on his engagement to the then Princess Elizabeth. When asked about his recollections of the year-old Duke, Mr Evans replied: 'He was a bit randy but you had better not put that down. The former naval commander was questioned further about his quip and willingly agreed to be quoted and, in a move worthy of the Duke himself, said the word 'very' should be inserted before randy.
